Argentina, nicknamed Los Pumas, has demonstrated in recent years that they have the ability to compete with and beat the higher ranked teams in international rugby. Argentina finished third in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and is hoping to best that result at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Having undertaken a period of reconstruction in the build up to Rugby World Cup 2011, Argentina will be hoping their new breed of young stars will play with added passion and flair and set the rugby stage alight at RWC 2011.
The Argentinian coach, Santiago Phelan (known as ‘Tati’ to his players), will be focusing his team on remaining disciplined throughout the Rugby World Cup, and encouraging his players to build on their ability to produce fantastic back line moves that can tear apart the best defensive plans. The powerful forward pack of the Argentinian team will need to continue their intimidating form if they are to once again upset the odds at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The biggest question facing the Pumas is whether their starting fly-half and star performer Juan Martín Hernández will be match fit and able to play. Hernández has been left out of the Pumas' provisional squad for the Rugby Content Template SkySport.co.nz/Rugby Page | 4 of 8 World Cup in New Zealand to continue his recovery.
He injured himself earlier this season playing with Racing Metro in the French Top 14. Team doctors say there is a possibility that he will be ready for the Rugby World Cup, but it remains to be seen if he can participate. If he is not able to play, he will be replaced by Toulon's Felipe Contempomi, who will move from centre.
